Growth in Healthy Living: How to Improve Indoor Air Quality Effectively

Securing Strong Indoor Air Quality: Key Insights and Improvement TipsKolkata is currently battling hazardous air quality, with AQI levels in several areas reporting “poor” to “very poor” conditions, a stark reminder of the severity of the issue we face right here at home. According to Dyson engineer, Theo Jones, indoor air quality can be even more affected than outdoor pollution, making it essential to maintain cleaner air inside our homes.

According to the World Air Quality Report 2023 , India ranks among the top five most polluted countries in the world, with an alarming average PM2.5 concentration more than 10 times higher than the WHO’s annual guideline. The cold weather often traps pollutants, exacerbating the problem within our homes.

To address these concerns, Theo Jones, Dyson Engineer shares his insights about the indoor air quality in our home that could help us make educated decisions to reduce air pollution exposure.

How can air purifiers help maintain better indoor air quality?

Investing in an air purifier is the most effective way to remove a wide range of pollutants from the air. Advanced filtration technologies, such as HEPA and carbon filters, can remove a wide range of pollutants, including dust, pollen, pet dander, and smoke with Dyson’s latest machines offering HEPA filtration to ensure the pollutants are trapped, while formaldehyde sensing and cooling airflow maintain air quality year-round.

What contributes to indoor air pollution?

Pollution happens indoors through day-to-day activities and eventually make up a complex cocktail of pollutants.

Everyday we breathe in upto 9,000 litres of air1 and spend up to 90% of our time behind closed doors2.

How can air purifiers help maintain better indoor air quality?

Investing in an air purifier is one of the most effective ways to remove a wide range of pollutants from the air. Advanced filtration technologies can remove a wide range of pollutants, including dust, pollen, pet dander, smoke, and VOCs, with Dyson’s latest machines offering HEPA filtration to ensure that pollutants remain trapped, while formaldehyde sensing and cooling airflow maintain air quality year-round.

Dyson’s latest air purification technology, the Dyson Purifier Big+Quiet, is designed to purify air in spaces as large as 1000 sq.ft. It uses Cone Aerodynamics to deliver 10-meter projection. The machine is engineered to operate quietly, producing just 56 decibels of noise – making it Dyson’s quietest yet strongest purifier. The Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool™, uses Air Multiplier™ technology for whole-room purification and 350° oscillation. Users can customize settings via the Dyson Link app or the LCD screen to personalize airflow for cooling, heating, or purification.

What are some additional tips for improving indoor air quality?

We can do little to control the quality of air we breathe outside. But we can follow these tips to keep our home free of pollution:

  • Use cleaning products wisely: Using natural cleaning products can lower the amount of VOCs in your indoor air. Opt for a vacuum cleaner with strong suction, HEPA filtration to trap fine particles, and specialized attachments to reach areas like crevices and upholstery.
  • Vacuum regularly: We see dust in the air when cleaning sofas or playing with cushions. This dust can be harmful when breathed in, however, regular vacuuming is one of the easiest ways to reduce particulate pollution at home.
  • Scents in moderation: Some of the things we enjoy at home, like scented candles, can also be sources of indoor air pollution. Rather than completely letting go of lighting candles, try them in moderation and preferably in evenings.
