Shri Jayant Sinha Champions Climate Investments at IVCA GreenReturns Summit 2024
03rd December 2024: India’s apex industry body for alternative assets, the Indian Venture and Alternate Capital Association (IVCA), hosted the GreenReturns Summit in New Delhi. The Summit was chaired by Shri Jayant Sinha, former Minister of State for Finance, and Former Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Government of India.
The IVCA GreenReturns Summit highlighted the climate investment potential in India, with the aim of attracting financial professionals from the Global North and promoting collaboration among investors, industry leaders, and the government. With an eye on increasing the flow of commercial and impact capital, the summit sought to establish strategic frameworks for climate adaptation and resilience. With a focus on policy, investments, regulations, and technology, all attention was on innovative financial, regulatory, and business solutions customised to the requirements of the Global South.
Emphasising how India needs to follow the green frontier development model, Shri Jayant Sinha said, “Net zero is net positive for India, offering a transformative opportunity for growth and sustainability. To achieve this, we must adopt the green frontier development model by ramping up renewables, enforcing EV mandates, scaling green businesses like hydrogen, and integrating into the global carbon market. The modelling for India’s path to net zero by 2070 highlights a pressing need—by 2030, 20-30% of vehicles sold must be electric, yet we have miles to go. Climate change is not just a threat; it’s also a massive disruptor. Disruption fuels innovation, and innovation drives returns. The green revolution is here, and it’s reshaping markets and opportunities for investors.”
India will play a crucial role in the global fight against carbon emissions and climate change. However, achieving meaningful reductions will require trillions of dollars in investments over the coming decades. To mobilise such funding, industries must attain economic viability, which calls for close collaboration with policymakers to establish effective market frameworks. The IVCA GreenReturns Summit, designed as a pivotal platform for fostering dialogues and interactions, sought to align climate finance with impactful investments. It served as an excellent venue for hosting side meetings with a diverse array of investors and policymakers, unlocking opportunities for collaboration and strategic partnerships.
