New Delhi, Sep 23: Veteran actor Anant Nag has been conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2024, recognising his remarkable contribution to Indian cinema over a career spanning more than five decades.
President Droupadi Murmu presented the prestigious honour to Anant Nag, acknowledging his distinctive contribution to the country’s cinematic and cultural landscape.
Anant Nag began his acting journey in theatre before establishing himself as a prominent figure in Indian cinema. Over the decades, he has worked across Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Marathi films, building a diverse body of work.
Known for his natural, understated and realistic style of acting, Nag has portrayed a wide range of characters and has remained closely associated with both theatre and cinema. His career includes more than 300 films, along with notable television work, including the widely acclaimed Malgudi Days.
The actor has previously received several major honours, including the Padma Bhushan in 2025, for his contribution to the arts.
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award, instituted in 1969, is the highest official honour in Indian cinema and is presented for an individual’s outstanding contribution to the growth and development of the industry.
The recognition of Anant Nag celebrates not only his longevity but also his contribution to Indian storytelling across languages and generations. His journey continues to represent the enduring connection between theatre, cinema and India’s diverse cultural traditions.
