Berhampur, Sept. 24 (UDN): The Odisha Works Department has ordered a special technical inspection of the under-construction Gate Bazaar flyover in Berhampur following concerns raised over the quality and safety of the project.
A Quality Control team has been directed to visit the construction site and conduct a technical audit of the ongoing work. The team will examine the project and submit a detailed report based on its findings.
MP Seeks Independent Assessment
The inspection follows a representation by Berhampur Lok Sabha MP Pradeep Kumar Panigrahy to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, seeking an assessment of the flyover’s construction quality and safety.
Panigrahy had cited complaints from local residents, commuters and organisations regarding the quality of materials and progress of the project, and sought an independent technical audit.
He also referred to the 2017 Bomikhal flyover collapse in Bhubaneswar while urging the government to ensure that construction and safety standards are followed at Gate Bazaar.
Quality Control Team to Examine Work
The technical assessment is expected to cover the ongoing construction and related quality and safety aspects. Any deficiencies identified during the inspection will be documented in the report to be submitted to the department.
The Works Department had earlier reviewed concerns raised by elected representatives over infrastructure projects and said the Gate Bazaar flyover work was progressing despite challenges associated with construction near a busy junction.
The findings of the latest inspection will determine whether any further action is required regarding the construction work.
