Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh | 3 October 2026: In the world’s oldest living city- where India first learned to engineer water, stone, and settlements into permanence – the nation’s youngest engineering minds gathered to shape what it will build next. From October 1 to 3, IIT (BHU), Varanasi hosted the opening edition of the 2026-27 season of the Building Bharat Sampaark Innovation Boot Camp in Civil Engineering, as the country’s most consequential civil engineering movement returned for a second season with renewed scale and ambition.
The response set the tone. Over 500 registrations and 83 Civilathon entries poured in from institutions across India, as students took on the challenges that will define the nation’s infrastructure future.
Season Two carries forward a journey that began by bringing together India’s brightest engineering minds across some of the country’s leading institutions. Building Bharat Sampaark travelled through IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras before culminating in a National Startup Contest at JSW Vijayanagar—where national champions were crowned and civil engineering took centre stage in India’s innovation and startup ecosystem. What began as a bold proposition has become a national institution; the new season opens on that legacy, larger in reach and sharper in intent.

Choosing Varanasi to raise the curtain was deliberate. Home to an engineering legacy that began in 1919 with the establishment of Banaras Engineering College (BENCO) under Banaras Hindu University, IIT (BHU) stands at the intersection of heritage and horizon. Its Civil Engineering Department traces its roots to 1949, carrying forward a tradition of engineering education that has evolved across generations.
“Building Bharat Sampaark represents exactly the kind of academia-industry partnership India needs at this moment, and to open its new season at IIT (BHU), Varanasi is a matter of immense pride for us. Civil engineering carries the profound responsibility of shaping the physical fabric of our nation. It is heartening to see a platform that challenges our students to connect their knowledge to the real work of building India — and the calibre of ideas we witnessed here reflects the extraordinary promise of this generation of engineers.”
— Prof. Amit Patra, Director, IIT (BHU), Varanasi
The platform continues to be strengthened by the support of the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI Aayog; the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India; the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE); and the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA). Together, these institutions bring expertise, mentorship, innovation pathways and institutional support to the platform—reinforcing the role of civil engineering and young innovators in advancing the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
“The question is no longer whether India’s young civil engineers have ideas. They clearly do. The harder question is whether we can build the platforms, the mentorship and the industry pathways that allow those ideas to survive beyond a competition room. To open a new season at IIT (BHU), Varanasi is a reaffirmation of that belief. We want young engineers to move from identifying a problem to building a solution, and ultimately from being participants to becoming innovators, founders and builders. That journey is not separate from Viksit Bharat 2047 — it is the prerequisite for it.”
— Dr. Rajaneesh Dasgupta, Trustee & Director General, Association of Infrastructure Industry (India) | National Director, Building Bharat Sampaark
“India’s infrastructure ambitions will only be as strong as the engineers who build them. What Building Bharat Sampaark has created is a platform where young minds don’t just present ideas, they learn to think like founders and builders. JSW is proud to stand behind a movement that is turning India’s civil engineering talent into the innovators and entrepreneurs our infrastructure story needs- the people who will build a Viksit Bharat.”
– JSW Group
Over three days, participants engaged in expert-led masterclasses, intensive mentorship and the Civilathon – a rigorous problem-solving arena where ideas are tested not only for technical merit, but for real-world relevance and their potential to scale. The strongest ideas from this and subsequent editions will advance along the Building Bharat Sampaark pipeline toward the destination that produced last season’s champion: deployable, real-world impact.
With its 2026–27 season now underway, Building Bharat Sampaark reaffirms its standing as India’s premier platform for civil engineering innovation – uniting academia, industry and government behind a single conviction: that the engineers who will build a Viksit Bharat are already here, and already building.
