Discovering Culinary Excellence: Pema Takchung Lepcha’s Visionary Journey at Hunaaan
With nearly three decades of culinary experience, Chef Pema Takchung Lepcha, fondly known as Chef Pema, stands as the creative force behind Hunaaan, one of Bangalore’s most loved Pan-Asian restaurants. His journey began in Gangtok, Sikkim, where a deep appreciation for Asian flavours and a respect for food and service took shape. What started as a modest beginning soon evolved into a lifelong pursuit of authenticity, balance, and innovation within Asian cuisine.

Two decades ago, Chef Pema founded Hunaaan, originally a Chinese restaurant that has since grown into a Pan-Asian destination celebrating the diversity of Asia while maintaining the integrity of its flavours. His guiding philosophy is simple yet profound, never compromising on quality or service. Influenced by the precision of Japanese cooking, the warmth of Chinese comfort food, and the vibrancy of Southeast Asian flavours, he believes food should tell a story, one of emotion, connection, and discovery. Every dish at Hunaaan reflects this ethos, offering depth, harmony, and soul.
A self-taught chef, Pema credits his uncle, also a chef, as his earliest mentor, teaching him the importance of understanding ingredients and maintaining balance. At Hunaaan, he leads with calm precision and collaboration, valuing curiosity, consistency, and teamwork. His approach to menu creation is meticulous, involving months of testing and refinement. He champions the use of seasonal and sustainable produce, ensuring every element contributes meaningfully to the final dish.
Among his many creations, the Steamed Sea Bass with Chilli Black Bean Sauce remains a favourite, light yet flavourful, wholesome yet indulgent. Beyond the kitchen, Pema finds joy and focus in football, a sport that mirrors the teamwork and discipline central to his culinary philosophy. As Hunaaan expands into Indiranagar, Chef Pema continues to evolve with changing tastes, staying true to his belief that food is more than flavour, it is emotion, memory, and connection.
