New Delhi, Aug 26: India’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) import costs are rising as international gas prices and shipping expenses move higher, increasing the overall cost of securing supplies from overseas.
The rise in LNG costs is significant for India because the country depends on imports to supplement domestic natural gas production. LNG is an important source of energy for sectors such as fertilisers, city gas distribution, refineries, petrochemicals, power generation and other industries.
Higher gas prices directly increase the value of imported cargoes, while stronger freight rates add to the delivered cost of the fuel. The combination can put additional pressure on companies that rely on imported LNG, particularly those exposed to spot-market purchases.
The impact can extend across the wider economy. Industries using natural gas as a feedstock or fuel may face higher operating costs, while city gas companies could come under pressure to manage the increase without significantly raising prices for customers.
India’s LNG demand has been supported by the expansion of the city gas network and the continued use of natural gas across industrial and commercial applications. As consumption grows, the country’s exposure to movements in international LNG prices also becomes more important.
Importers are increasingly looking at a mix of long-term contracts and spot purchases to manage supply and price risks. Long-term agreements can provide greater supply stability, while spot cargoes allow buyers to respond to changing market conditions.
The latest increase in import costs also highlights the importance of strengthening domestic gas production and diversifying LNG supply sources. Additional regasification capacity, expanded pipeline networks and greater access to multiple international suppliers could improve India’s ability to manage price and supply volatility.
For the government and energy companies, controlling the impact of higher LNG prices will remain important as India balances growing energy demand with the need to keep fuel costs manageable.
With natural gas expected to remain part of India’s evolving energy mix, international LNG prices and shipping rates will continue to be closely watched for their impact on the country’s energy import bill and industrial costs.
