According to sources, the male bird had been unwell for some time and had stopped eating. It was reportedly found sitting in a corner of its enclosure, prompting zoo authorities to shift it to the isolation ward for specialised medical care.
Despite treatment, the bird could not survive.
The death has reduced the number of Scarlet Macaws at Nandankanan from four to three, raising concerns over the health and care of the remaining birds.
Four Macaws Arrived From Gujarat in September
Notably, four Scarlet Macaws, comprising two males and two females, were brought to Nandankanan Zoological Park on September 12, 2026.
The birds were transferred from the Radha Krishna Temple Elephant Welfare Trust (RKTEWT) in Jamnagar, Gujarat, which is associated with Anant Ambani-led Vantara.
Their arrival was an addition to the zoo’s exotic bird collection and attracted attention among wildlife enthusiasts.
With the death of one male Macaw, only three birds remain at the zoological park.
The latest incident has brought renewed attention to the health monitoring and veterinary care of exotic wildlife housed in zoological parks. Further details regarding the exact cause of the bird’s death are awaited.
