India’s technology industry is entering another phase of expansion as software services exports crossed $239 billion in 2025-26, highlighting the country’s growing role in the global digital economy.
According to the latest data, India’s IT software services exports increased 9.5 per cent to $239.3 billion during the year. Exports excluding services delivered through the overseas commercial presence of Indian companies stood at around $221.4 billion, registering growth of 8.2 per cent.
The figures underline the continued strength of India’s technology services industry, which has become an important source of export earnings and a major link between Indian businesses and global companies.
Technology services move towards higher-value work
India’s software industry is gradually moving beyond traditional outsourcing. Computer services account for a major share of software exports, while business process outsourcing continues to contribute significantly to the sector.
At the same time, demand is expanding for areas such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data analytics, digital engineering and enterprise technology solutions.
This shift is important because future growth in the technology sector is likely to depend increasingly on specialised skills and technology capabilities rather than only on the scale of the workforce.
Global markets remain important
The US continued to be the largest destination for Indian software services, accounting for 54.1 per cent of exports. Europe contributed 31.8 per cent, with the UK alone accounting for 15.4 per cent.
The strong presence in major technology markets provides Indian companies with access to global demand for software development, consulting, digital transformation and technology support.
However, expanding into newer markets could also help Indian technology companies diversify their export base and create additional opportunities across Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and other emerging economies.
AI could reshape the next stage of growth
Artificial intelligence is becoming one of the biggest forces influencing the global technology industry. For Indian IT companies, the growth of AI is creating both new business opportunities and the need to upgrade existing skills.
Companies are increasingly investing in AI engineering, cloud platforms, automation, data infrastructure and cybersecurity. These areas can support higher-value services and help Indian technology firms participate more deeply in global technology projects.
The transition could also encourage greater investment in research, product development and intellectual property, helping India gradually expand from a predominantly services-driven technology economy towards a broader technology ecosystem.
Opportunities for startups and smaller firms
The expansion of software exports is also creating space for startups and smaller technology companies.
Businesses working in fintech, health technology, cybersecurity, enterprise software, AI and cloud services can use India’s established technology ecosystem to develop specialised solutions for international customers.
A stronger ecosystem of startups, IT companies, research institutions and skilled professionals can create a wider technology supply chain and open new opportunities for innovation.
Impact on jobs and skills
The growth of software exports has implications for India’s employment landscape as demand rises for professionals with skills in software engineering, AI, data science, cybersecurity, cloud computing and digital technologies.
It is also increasing the importance of continuous skill development. As technology changes rapidly, companies and educational institutions will need to focus more on specialised training and industry-ready capabilities.
For young professionals, this could create opportunities in emerging technology fields, while for businesses, access to skilled talent will remain an important factor in competing for global technology contracts.
Strengthening India’s technology economy
The software export numbers also have a wider economic impact. Technology exports generate foreign exchange, support high-value employment and connect Indian companies with customers and businesses across the world.
The next opportunity for India is to increase the value generated from this existing technology base. Greater investment in AI, research and development, semiconductor-linked technologies, cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity and digital products could help expand the country’s position across the global technology value chain.
India’s software industry has already established a strong international presence. The next phase will be about converting that scale into greater innovation, deeper technology capabilities and higher-value exports.
The rise in software exports therefore reflects more than the growth of one industry. It points to the expanding role of technology in India’s exports, employment, innovation and broader economic development.
